Our Cottage Industry is in Zimbabwe, based in the Eastern Highlands, in the district of Nyanga. We craft a range of unique, high-class resin artefacts. The insertions include indigenous plant material found in our area, various dried beans and spices, such as lentils, chillies, black peppercorn and more recently traditional African wire and bead work.
This small enterprise was started in 1979 by Derek Archer, initially merely as a hobby. The handcrafted products have grown from inception both in demand and variety. We are proud that we still produce paperweights, 30 years later, however our main line is currently salad bowls and salad servers.
The unique products produced by this little cottage industry, are created by 17 local Africans from the surrounding villages. This clos ...e knit group are mainly women. At their call are three crafters who are responsible for the artistic layouts. Two of these artists have been creating indivulatistic articles for over 25 years.
In keeping with our ethos, the polishing women, who form the majority, are remunerated on a piecework bases, enabling them to attend to the needs of their family. To help with the grounding of a formal education, which has been limited in the parents, we have established a crèche for the pre-school children. Read more
